4 OPENINGS — 5 ARTISTS

With the New Year upon us, Arprim is proud to welcome Conversations Montréal/Lyon, a project in collaboration with Galerie B-312, Diagonale and La Vitrine, Atelier Daigneault/Schofield that highlights the work of five Lyon-based artists. This series of exhibitions is a follow-up to the Montreal portion of the project that was held in Lyon last spring under the curatorship of Marthe Carrier and Chloé Grondeau. Now, with from a proposal of Galerie Tator (Lyon, France), artist Julie Kieffer is presenting Rectangle violet in Arprim.

In this project, Kieffer explores how certain architectural notions have infiltrated the field of sculpture. This proposition is part of a recent set of interventions presented at the Friche Lamartine in Lyon, in which the artist uses large format printed images to construct a series of sculptures. Visitors are invited to walk around these volumes and experience the relationship between positive and negative forms, as well as between the surrounding space, the printed space on the surface of each sculpture, and the space of architectural projection.

Through a new series of images, Rectangle violet comes as an exploration of the spatial sense of the gallery that challenges our perception of space, and the temporality of our experience with its immersive scale. For Julie Kieffer, the installation is but a fragment of a larger fictional environment, one that remains grounded in real architecture. In it, floors and walls are much more than inert support structures; they are fecund surfaces from which the artist’s own interventions may emerge.

Born in 1989, Julie Kieffer lives and works in Lyon, France. Graduated from Villa Arson in 2016, she has since presented her work in group shows at Fondation Yvon Lambert and Fondation Bernard Mercadet, and in a solo show at Fondation Takini. With Galerie Tator (Lyon), she participated in a series of residencies at Factatory, Lieu Commun (Toulouse) in 2017, as well as Friche Lamartine (Lyon), in 2018. A recipient of the Ateliers Médicis grant, she is now working in Atelier Sumo’s studios.
